Privacy Policy
Effective October 16, 2026
The short version: Cruxlog doesn't collect your personal data. There are no accounts, no analytics, no ads, no tracking and no crash-reporting services. Your logbook and your location stay on your iPhone.
This policy covers the Cruxlog iPhone and iPad app and this website, cruxlog.rocks. Cruxlog is made by Lawrence Markel ("we", "us").
What stays on your device
- Your logbook. Sends you log (the problem, date, style, attempts, rating and any notes) and your to-do list are saved only on your device. We never receive them.
- Settings. Your appearance choice and which base map you use.
- Offline maps you download.
All the climbing data (areas, boulders, problems, grades, beta) is built into the app, so browsing and searching never send anything anywhere.
If you back up your iPhone with iCloud Backup or to a computer, iOS includes Cruxlog's data in that backup like any other app's. Apple handles those backups under your settings; we can't see them.
Location
If you allow it, Cruxlog uses your location only while the app is open to show where you are on the map, so you can find nearby boulders. Cruxlog never stores, sends or shares your location, and it doesn't use location in the background. You can say no or change this any time in Settings › Cruxlog › Location; everything else keeps working.
When the app uses the internet
Cruxlog works fully offline. It goes online only for the background map:
- Offline map downloads from maps.cruxlog.rocks. The app fetches a small list of available maps when the home screen or a region page first appears after the app starts, and again whenever you open Offline Maps. It downloads a region's map files only when you tap Download. These requests contain no account, name or device ID. Like any website, our host Cloudflare receives your IP address and basic request details (time, file requested, app and iOS version) to deliver the files and protect the server from abuse, under Cloudflare's privacy policy. We don't use this to identify you.
- Apple Maps. If you use Apple Maps as the base map (the default until you download an offline map), the map imagery comes from Apple and is covered by Apple's privacy policy.
Links you tap, like "Directions" (opens Apple Maps) or "View on OpenBeta" (opens your browser), take you to those services, which have their own privacy policies. The app never contacts OpenBeta by itself.
What we don't do
- We don't sell or share your data. We don't have any to sell.
- We don't track you across other apps or websites.
- No ads, no analytics, no advertising identifiers.
Deleting your data
You can delete a send or a to-do from the Logbook (touch and hold it), and remove offline maps from the Offline Maps screen. Deleting the app deletes all of its data from your device. Since we never have a copy, there is nothing to request from us.
Children
Cruxlog is for a general audience. It doesn't collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
This website
cruxlog.rocks uses no cookies, analytics or scripts. It's hosted on Cloudflare, which processes requests (including IP addresses) to serve the pages and block abuse.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the effective date above. If the app ever starts collecting data, this page will say so before that version ships.
